One March afternoon I went out to paint and it was warm and sunny and suddenly, I realized, it was spring. What a feeling, when winter has passed and the trees are starting to turn purple, red and orange with their buds. I don’t long for it like some people do—I love the winter and I know that without it, spring would just be…nice. But it wouldn’t be spring. Every year, a resurrection, and a special feeling of excitement and anticipation and impending freedom from coats and scarves and sweaters…I met my neighbor who owns this barn while I worked on this painting, and she kindly invited me to come back any time and set up anywhere I wished on her property. I love her red barn with its big bank of forsythia (not yet in bloom when I made this image), so I am grateful to her for her offer and for keeping another beautiful field in our town just that: a beautiful field.
