I love this hayfield on Rte 116, on the way into my rural Massachusetts town from the highway. These three shrubs make a little trio against the edge of the forest that’s always changing. I’ve painted it numerous times because it’s so simple but rich, the three shrubs always appearing like a group but with their three distinct shapes and colors. This is Audubon land, and the state has recently begun an ecological restoration on part of the land, planting native trees, grasses and shrubs. The upper part of the field though is still mowed for hay. It’s wonderful to know that this land will never be developed and will always be a source of habitat for the creatures we share the land with, as well as a source of beauty and inspiration for us humans.
